Fluorinated graphene nanoribbons from unzipped single-walled carbon nanotubes for ultrahigh energy density lithium-fluorinated carbon batteries

Lithium-fluorinated carbon (Li-CFx) batteries have become one of the most widely applied power sources for high energy density applications because advantages provided by CFx cathode. Moreover, large gap between practical and theoretical potentials alongside stoichiometric limit commercial graphite fluorides indicates potential further improvement. Herein, monolayer fluorinated graphene nanoribbons (F-GNRs) were fabricated unzipping single-walled nanotubes (SWCNTs) using pure F2 gas at temperature, which delivered an unprecedented 2738.45 W h kg−1 due to combined effect a fluorination degree discharge plateau, realized abundant edges destroyed periodic structure, respectively. Furthermore, calculation confirmed zigzag pathway fluorine atoms that adsorbed outside SWCNTs hence initiated spontaneous process form F-GNRs. The controllable feasible approach preparing compounds different applications, especially ultrahigh cathodes.
